This was Shannon's first World Championships, at age 14. She did great in the team competition, and in the AA, she finished 6th. She started on beam, and was doing great until she took several steps on her full-in dismount. She came back strong on the other evetns. She qualified to all 4 event finals. Her vaults were good but her second wasn't out of a 10. She hit a great bars set and got the silver medal! On beam, she had a good routine again but took steps on her full-in. She made hre floor passes and finished 4th there.

Shannon was excellent in this competition! She had the highest total in the team competition, compulsories and optionals combined. In the AA, she finished 2nd by .012. She had a few tiny bobbles on beam, but hit a PERFECT vault for a 9.975. In event finals, she won a silver and 2 bronzes. She stuck her beam routine and tied for the silver, and was superb on bars and floor for a bronze on each of those events.

Shannon was expected by many to win this meet. She had the highest score on every event in preliminaries, and some even expected her to win every event, including the AA. She started the AA competition on bars, her only flaw was a small hop on her double layout dismount. She was a little shaky on beam, almost falling on her dismount and only scoring 9.625. She came back strong on floor, and it came down to vault for her to win the meet. She stuck both, scoring a "perfect" 9.8 on her second. She won by the smallest margin in history--.007! She was sick during the whole meet and pulled out of vault finals. She competed on bars and won with a near perfect set. The next day, she was still ill, and fell 3 times off beam. She came back on floor to win her 3rd gold, the most an American gymnast has won in a world championships.

FLOOR: RO whip ff ff piked full-in; switch leap, sissone, split jump; FHS Rudi ff layout step-out; switch-side; ff, ring jump, Valdez; FHS front-full bounder front tuck. Unlike the year before, few expected Shannon to win again. She was older and taller, and also just coming off a pulled stomach muscle. Just days before the meet she could barely do a kip on bars. Shannon started the meet on bars, as she had in many meets before, meets she had won. She did a great routine, especially since she hadn't been training much on bars. She hit her beam routine, but ran into some problems on floor. She was doing great until her last pass, which she almost sat down. It came down to vault to see if Shannon could become the first American ever to win back-to-back world titles. She did her new vault and landed them both, scoring high enough to take the title over Lavinia Milosovici and becoming the first gymnast in 22 years to win 2 world championships in a row.

1994 Goodwill Games-- VAULT: Hristakieva, Phelps (event finals).
BARS: straddle-over, kip cast handstand, giant, giant-hop-full, Gienger, kip cast handstand, free hip, reverse 1 1/2 pirouette to mixed grip, straddle back to handstand, glide, straddle-over, kip cast handstand, Tkatchev, kip cast handstand, giant, double layout.

Shannon had never competed in a Goodwill Games before. She was the alternate in 1990. Here she was the leader of the American, with 3 younger teammates, all from Dynamo, finishing out the team. In the team finals, Shannon had a few problems, almost falling on beam and under-rotating her double layout off bars. She did an excellent floor routine in the last rotation. USA finished just out of the medals in 4th. In the AA, Shannon's biggest competitor was Dina Kochetkova. Shannon performed better than she did in team, but came up a little short of Dina. This was the first meet she hadn't won in about 2 years. She came back in event finals, placing 2nd on vault and bars, and winning beam and floor.

1995 Kodak Invitational-- VAULT: Yurchenko-full.

This was a small meet for Shannon, to prepare for the American Cup. She tried some new skills and debuted a new floor routine. She looked a little tired on bars, but was excellent on beam. Her new floor routine was a very different style from her last one, to jazzy music. She made all her passes but had small stumble on a switch ring leap. She won the AA.

Shannon had a chance to become the first gymnast ever to win 3 consecutive world AA titles at this championships. But the day before team optionals, she sprained her right ankle. Her coach only wanted her to compete bars, but as the day went along, the team needed on her each event. She did a great job, leading the American team to a bronze medal. Again, Steve wanted her to scratch from the AA to rest her foot, but Shannon was determined to compete. She had a small mistake on floor and great vaults. But she came up short on a giant-full on bars, finishing in 12th place. She only competed in bars and beam finals, although she qualified for all 4. She didn't get an individual medal, but proved what a champion she is here.

Shannon had won several World Championships gold medals, but never in the Olympics. She started out very strong in compulsories, with the highest beam score of any gymnast. In team finals, she did a great bar routine but didn't get a great score. She did her beam routine perfectly except for a hop on the dismount. She underrotated her double layout on floor but didn't fall, and stood up her vaults. She placed 2nd in preliminaries, only behind Lilia Podkopayeva. She finally got an Olympic gold medal, with the Mag 7.
In the AA, she started on bars., as she had often in the past. Just like in team finals, she did an excellent routine but the score was considerably low. She did another stuck beam routine and got the highest beam score of the AA and was in 2nd place overall. But on her floor routine, she stumbled on her double layout and stepped out of bounds on her full-in. She couldn't hold back the tears, but came back strong on vault, sticking her 2nd. She finished 8th.
Shannon had only qualified to beam finals, but replaced Kerri Strug on vault. She did a Hristakieva first, with a hop on the landing. As she ran for her 2nd vault, her steps were off and she missed 1 hand on the horse, landing on her seat. Again, she burst into tears when she came off the podium. The next day was beam finals, hre last chance for Olympic gold in 96. She stuck everything in her routine perfectly, and only had a tiny slide of one foot on the dismount. She scored a 9.862, the same score she got in team finals and the AA, and won her first individual Olympic gold.

BEAM: press to handstand; switch leap, ff 1/4 to split handstand, 1/4 turn, back extension roll; front tuck; ff layout; gainer layout; RO double tuck.
This was just a fun competition, with 6 of the Mag 7 competing on 3 events against a team of foreign gymnasts. Shannon did bars first, doing a great routine with a step on her dismount. She took out 1 layout on beam but the rest was excellent. She got a pretty low score. She did not compete on floor because of her wrist injury.

She ended on floor with a new routine, and stood up all 4 passes. This was her first AA competition in almost 4 years. On the 2nd day, she began on vault and landed stiff-legged on her first atempt.
